FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, 8vo, half-title, portrait bust of author on title, original cloth, lacking dust-jacket, in quarter-morocco chemise and slipcase, spine slightly sunned

Inscribed by the author: "Clement K. Shorter, (in whose paper some of these verses first saw the light) from Thomas Hardy, Oct. 1916". The recipient was editor of both the Illustrated London News and the English Illustrated Magazine and an influential Fleet Street figure. Shorter later founded the Sphere and Tatler magazines in which some of these poems first appeared and he was married to the WW1 poet Dora Sigerson Shorter. A very good copy lacking the dust-jacket.
