Description

Iris Tree

Poems. Nassau, Bahamas: privately printed, 1917

FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, 8vo, original wrappers, wrappers somewhat creased and worn

First edition (preceding the later publication by John Lane in 1919 (New York) and 1920 (London)). Inscribed to her school friend Nancy Cunard: "Nancy Darling, from Darling Iris". Tree—the daughter of Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and Helen Maud—was much in demand as an artist's model in Bloomsbury and beyond, having been depicted in various media by Duncan Grant, Augustus John, Vanessa Bell, Jacob Epstein, Man Ray and Modigliani. Her output as a poet was slim but well-received (as was her later acting ability, at least by Federico Fellini). The edition was published while Tree was on honeymoon in the Bahamas with Curtis Moffat. Only two other copies of this edition are located in libraries.
