Is This a Cowboy Hat or America's Crown? Inside a One-of-One Red Stetson Cowboy Hat

24 JULY | NEW YORK

The cowboy hat is America's crown.

This is only the second time Stetson has ever produced this red colorway for a cowboy hat. The first went to Beyoncé, during her Cowboy Carter era. The second is the Fire Horse Hat — a one-of-one creation commissioned by Gold House to mark both America's 250th anniversary and the Chinese zodiac year of the Fire Horse.

It's also a tribute to the roughly 12,000 Chinese immigrant laborers who built the western stretch of the Transcontinental Railroad, enduring some of the most dangerous work of the 19th century, and who were historically barred from wearing the hat that came to define the West they built — and left out of the 1869 ceremony marking its completion.

This one-of-one red cowboy hat is on offer at Sotheby's New York to benefit Gold House, and is currently on exhibit as part of the 250 Years of American Art & Culture exhibit at the Breuer building in New York in honor of America's 250th anniversary.
