Samurai culture is an iconic and fascinating element of Japanese history and identity. Over the course of a millennium, the samurai had a considerable impact on the arts and crafts of Japan. Samurai demand for swords, fittings and armour for the battlefield stimulated technological advances and the creation of exceptional metal works. Moreover, as a leading caste of Japan’s relatively peaceful Edo period, samurai patrons further encouraged and financed the production of elaborate ceremonial armour and sword mountings. Our Fine Japanese Art auction includes a wide group of samurai art from three private collections, presenting armour, helmets and swords that showcase the elegance, the eccentricity and the tremendous skill of Japanese construction.
