  Although in an engraving by Christian von Mechel (of which a photo is affixed to the reverse of the panel) this image is referred to as a self-portrait by Hans Holbein, Jan Gossaert appears a more likely source, and it perhaps reflects a lost original.

  Greek Master, active in Venice, second quarter of the 16^th century, Madonna and Child with Saints Peter and Apollonia
  Estimate £6,000–8,000

  Many elements of this painting – the horizontal format, colourful palette, the choice of subject matter, with the Madonna’s high throne covered in rich material, and the evocation of dawn in the background, not to mention the stylised branches of the trees and the figures themselves – point towards the hand of an icon painter, most probably Greek, working in Venice in the first half of the 16th century.

  Follower of Jan Davidsz. de Heem, Still life with fruit in a gilt charger and a lobster on a porcelain plate
  Estimate £5,000–7,000

  De Heem's first still life works date from the late 1620s, when he was working in Leiden, and was influenced by the paintings of Balthasar van der Ast and the more muted style of Pieter Claesz. from Haarlem. However, by 1636, he had moved to Antwerp, where he was exposed to the freer, more decorative style of the southern Netherlands. De Heem's great achievement was to synthesize these two approaches and forge a new style that was both painterly and extraordinarily illusionistic.

  Claude-Joseph Vernet, Mountainous river landscape with two fishermen casting a net, and a man with his horse-drawn cart travelling along a sandy path
  Estimate £10,000–15,000

  As a pure Alpine scene, this is a very rare work within Vernet's œuvre. In 1778, Vernet spent six weeks in the Swiss Alps with his son Carle, at the invitation of his most important patron, Jean Girardot de Marigny. This mountainous landscape with rapids would have been inspired by Vernet's trip of two years prior, as well as the five goauches he purchased in 1780 from the Swiss artist Caspar Wolf (1735-98), known for his dramatic Alpine landscapes.

  Bonington was English by birth, but moved with his family to Calais in 1817. Between moving to Paris in 1818 and his death in 1828, he undertook several sketching tours of the Normandy coast.
