This work is available to view at Sotheby’s, New Bond Street, 13 – 18 September (weekdays 9am – 4.30pm; weekend 12-5pm).
The canvas has a firm lining - the paint surface is stable if a little dirty. There are some discoloured retouchings visible but no major damage. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals retouchings throughout the blue of the sky and water - the most concentrated area is the left hand side of the sky - and in the sides of the buildings in shadow. The main architectural details have relatively little intervention.
There is a degree of wear in some of the details - notably the crowd gathered in the Piazza San Marco, and a distinctive pattern of craquelure has developed in the sky.
Offered in a gesso gold painted frame in good condition.
