S otheby’s has been entrusted with the sale of the distinguished collection of more than 700 works of art formerly belonging to Röbbig München, long regarded as one of the world’s foremost specialists in Meissen porcelain. The collection will be presented across a series of sales: two auctions in Paris this June, followed by an online sale in Cologne in September.
In 1976, the Röbbig gallery opened on Prannerstraße, then the center of Munich’s premier art market, and achieved international recognition for its expertise in early Meissen porcelain from the manufactory’s golden age, circa 1710–1760, complemented by rare works from Du Paquier Vienna and other distinguished German manufactories, including Frankenthal, Nymphenburg, and KPM Berlin, as well as for exceptional mid-eighteenth-century French and German furniture.
As early Meissen porcelain remained at its core, the gallery presented these treasures of “white gold” alongside eighteenth-century paintings, and French marquetry furniture with finely chased gilt-bronze mounts, recreating the sophisticated interiors for which they were originally intended.
In 2019, the gallery moved to the neo-Baroque Karolinenpalais at Brienner Straße 25, where the Venetian interior architect and opera set designer Massimo Pizzi Gasparon recreated the atmosphere of an elegant eighteenth-century bel étage. From the outset, the gallery cultivated a rigorous vision, assembling works distinguished by their rarity, historical significance, and illustrious provenance.
