Helen Frankenthaler’s revolutionary soak-stain technique transformed post-war abstract painting, creating luminous compositions defined by fluid color, transparency and monumental scale. A leading figure of American abstraction, she played a pivotal role in the development of Color Field painting in the 1950s. The Kunstmuseum Basel presents a major exhibition exploring Frankenthaler’s dialogue with art history, placing her works alongside masterpieces from the 15th to the 20th centuries, drawn from the museum's collection. The exhibition also features “Riverhead,” 1963, a painting generously gifted to the Kunstmuseum Basel by the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation in 2024.
