A prolific figurative painter famed for his frank evocations of his many sitters, the British painter Lucian Freud also readily turned to drawing in his practice. The Louisiana Museum presents an exhibition examining the role drawing played in his artistic process, as he translated observations onto paper and canvas in what he described as an intensification of reality. The show features works in pencil, pen, ink, charcoal and etching, displayed alongside a select group of paintings, previously unseen works and archival research. Several drawings correspond closely to the paintings, revealing the artist’s working process firsthand. Charting his earliest drawings and paintings to works created shortly before his death, the exhibition traces his preoccupation with the human face and form, his most lifelong interest.
