Kunstmuseum Basel, Neubau

Basel | Switzerland

Striking extension for post-war art and exhibitions

The Kunstmuseum Neubau (New Building), which opened in 2016, is an extension of the Kunstmuseum Basel. The sharply angled building, designed by local architects Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein, is joined with the main building via an underpass. The original museum now houses work from the 15th century to 1950, while the extension with its polygonal floor-plan showcases works post-1950, with contemporary art displayed in the Kunstmuseum Basel, Gegenwart. The upper, skylit floor of the new building houses large temporary exhibitions, with past presentations on Dan Flavin, Jasper Johns, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Brice Marden. The middle floor and part of the ground floor display works from the permanent collection.
