The Collection of Sidney and Bernice Clyman
Alongside masterworks of African sculpture, Sidney and Bernice Clyman assembled a deep and thoughtful collection that represents the New York Post-war period at its very best, with examples by Wayne Thiebaud, Adolph Gottlieb, Richard Estes and Jean Dubuffet. The Clymans summarized their collecting ethos perfectly in a 1999 exhibition catalogue: “African art is not realism and not completely abstract. Rather, it combines both in a new form of art that inspired and excited the modern masters in the beginning of this century and which was incorporated in their masterpieces. When African sculpture and the work of expressionism, cubism and abstraction are placed side by side, they ‘work’ together and ‘belong’. This is what we find so exciting.”
