binding: Lyonese panel stamp binding for G.F. Madruzzo (126 x 87 mm), ca 1572, light brown calf, gilt fillet around sides, panel stamp composed of raised interlaced strapwork interspersed with leaf arabesques and 2 grotesque masks on a deeply impressed azured ground surrounding an oval centre within an architectural scrollwork cartouche, within oval on upper cover tooled in gilt IFY/ MADRVTZ, with gilt stars above and below and within oval on lower cover a delicate arabesque stamp composed of raised strapwork and leafy arabesques on a gilt ground, flat spine stamped at head and tail with arabesque tools on azured ground flanked by 2 gilt fillets, in middle panel arabesque cornerpieces which are assembled in centre to form a large arabesque, the interstices filled with a semé of small fleurs-de-lis, gilt edges. (Binding expertly restored at edges.)
provenance: Gian Federico Madruzzo (c.1531-1586), initials “I.F.Y. Madrutz” on upper cover, evidently signifying the owner and his wife, Isabelle (Ysabelle) de Challant (1531-1596), and inscription to front free endpaper "15 Y 72 4 maj. Issog. [i.e., Castello di Issogne] Breues anni transeunt et semitam per quam non revertar ambulabo. Y" — inscription "Fr(atr)is Archangeli Platinae Mantuani ordinis praed(icatorum) et suorum amicorum, emptus Papiae a d(omi)no Andrea Viano Brixiensi" on title-page — G.
