Description
SENECA, LUCIUS ANNAEUS. L. Annei Senecae Cordubensis Tragoediae. Lyon: Sébastien Gryphe, 1548
A well-preserved copy of Gryphe's pocket edition of Seneca's Tragedies in a contemporary French binding.
16mo (124 x 71 mm). Italic type, 29 lines plus headline. collation: a-z8 aa-dd8: 216 leaves. Title-page with woodcut printer's device, woodcut initials, some leaves with lines or passages marked with marginal dashes in brown ink by an early reader.
binding: Contemporary French brown calf (133 x 82 mm), single gilt fillet border, gilt oval arabesque centrepiece stamped in negative, spine gilt in compartments with title lettered in first compartment, edges gilt. (Binding slightly rubbed, spine a little damaged.)
provenance: "N. Deschamps | 1598" (perhaps Nicolas Deschamps, poet of Auxerre), ownership inscription to title-page — another inked over early modern ownership inscription to title-page. acquisition: Purchased in 2001 from E.K.
