12mo (275 x 103 mm). Engraved frontispiece, title-page, woodcut headpieces; offsetting from frontispiece, one or two stray spots. In nineteenth-century tan calf, boards ruled in gilt, spine with raised bands in 6 compartments, 2nd and 3rd with red morocco labels lettered in gilt, others with repeat gilt motif, inside gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers; front hinge loose, lightly rubbed at joints and corners, stray scratches to boards.
A peculiar book of light verse dialogues between various couples, including a "Dialogue between a Surly Drunkard and his Obstinate Wife," "Between a Cobler and his Wife concerning, the education of their children," "Between a sober industrious Man and his drunken Wife," "Between a Man who eats and smokes Tobacco and his Snuff-taking Wife," "Between a kind rich Wife, and a man of inferior Fortune, whom she married for love," among numerous others. Rare. We can locate no other copies of this volume offered at auction in over ninety years.
