thanking Mrs Freshfield for her letter of condolence ("...my sister's death makes a great change in my life, for she was not only my nearest & dearest relative - she was also a cherished social relation, as it were, & she was a rare & remarkable person. At the same time it is a great liberation from suffering..."); on his plans to leave London and its social obligations; and making arrangements with Mrs Ritchie to join "your 'family' circle" when he is next in London; 9 pages, 8vo and 4to, 34 De Vere Gardens, London, and Lamb House, Rye, 14 March [1892] to 7 December 1900; light spotting and creasing
Two of these letters are written to Augusta Charlotte Freshfield, née Ritchie (1847-1911). The first of these letters was written to Mrs Freshfield following the death of Alice James on 6 March 1892 and also touches on the death of Mrs Freshfield's son the previous year. The remaining letter is written to Augusta Freshfield's sister-in-law Anne Isabella Ritchie, the author, daughter of W.M. Thackeray, and wife of Richmond Ritchie (who is mentioned in James's letter).
