T here is a kinship and camaraderie which exists in the world of wine, uniting winemakers with their peers, collectors with one another and both parties firmly together. Napa Valley Vintners (NVV) represents the best of this spirit. Supporting over 500 wineries throughout the region, NVV seeks the promote and protect the California valley, its interests and its people through promotion, advocacy and fundraising throughout the year.

Each summer NVV hosts a number of charity events through Collective Napa Valley, with proceeds benefiting the local community. This 2024 initiative will take the form of two back-to-back auctions: the Collective Napa Valley Barrel Auction (28-31 May) – featuring half-barrels donated by premium California winemakers – and Auction Napa Valley (1 June), hosted at Far Niente vineyards. The proceeds generated between these sales will support mental health initiatives for Napa Valley youth.

Collective Napa Valley Barrel Auction

The barrel auction is unlike any other powered by Sotheby’s as participants are given the opportunity to bid on wine still in barrel and sample them directly in the auction room. Each lot on offer is divided into 10 standard cases of wine, each to be won at increasing increments, and with a leaderboard displaying the top 10 paddles. Bidders must maintain a spot on the board in order to win, but with each increasing bid, they are pushed one spot closer to the brink of the leaderboard. If pushed off completely, one must bid the highest increment to get back onto the board, pushing each paddle down a spot and forcing a competing bidder into the same situation.

Fast-paced, festive and with fantastic food served throughout, this is not one to be missed.

Auction Napa Valley

This year, Auction Napa Valley will take place at the iconic Far Niente Winery. Chaired by Jeff Smith and Carolyn Duryea of Hourglass Winery, and catered by Michelin-starred Chef Phillip Tessier of PRESS in Saint Helena, the night will begin with a sunset dinner in the garden before attention is turned to the live sale focused around one-of-a-kind experiences connecting bidders with their favorite wineries and in destinations both far-flung and closer to home.

This year’s eclectic offering features tickets to the Singapore Grand Prix, VIP passes to the 2025 NBA All-Star weekend, access to Paris Fashion Week and a gastronomic tour of Japan to name a few. These lots will appear alongside VIP tasting experiences and historic magnums from legendary Napa estates, exclusive dinners, tours and an assortment of iconic Napa wines spanning 8 decades and a once-in-a-lifetime stay at two historic Château in Bordeaux.

Remote bidding is an option if you cannot attend in person but would still like to participate in either sale. You can support NVV and their mission more locally by attending future events or by purchasing wine from Premiere Napa Valley, a trade-only auction with retail partners available at select retailers and wine stores around the world.
