Biography

Felix Hale is a Director in Sotheby’s Tax, Heritage, & UK Museums department (Fiduciary Client Group) and is a member of Sotheby’s UK Chairmen’s Group. He has over a decade’s experience in the industry, having joined Sotheby’s in 2014.

Felix has worked with some of the most significant estates and collections in the UK, partnering with clients and their professional advisors on offers in lieu of tax, claims for Conditional Exemption and valuations. He also frequently represents clients before the government Export Reviewing Committee. He has worked on numerous sales from a variety of estates including the Estates of Lady Mary Soames, (Lord) Richard Attenborough, and Countess Mountbatten of Burma.

Felix works closely with UK Museums and Galleries and has negotiated a number of important acquisitions at institutions such as The Tate, the V&A, the Courtauld, and the National Gallery. Recent highlights include the acceptance in lieu of an important Bach manuscript, Cantata ‘Auf Christi Himmelfahrt allein (Bodleian Library, 2024) and a private sale of The Virgin and Child with Saints Louis and Margaret (National Gallery, London, 2025 – the highest price ever paid for an anonymous painting).

Felix is also one of Sotheby’s auctioneers, taking sales across a range of collecting categories, as well as for charities.

Before joining Sotheby’s, Felix studied History at Christ Church, Oxford. He is a STEP qualified Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) a member of the Professional Advisors to the International Art Market (PAIAM).
