An American Silver Salver, Philip Syng, Jr., Philadelphia, dated 1747


With piecrust rim, on four tall scrolled hoof feet, the back engraved with contemporary initials M above RE and date 1747, later engraved Robert and Elizabeth Moore, marked center of back PS in shield three times with two leaf marks, also with two French control marks.

Robert Moore was a Philadelphia merchant.  His son William married in 1757 Sarah Lloyd, of the prominent Philadelphia family, and served as President (Governor) of Pennsylvania 1781-82.  His granddaughter Elizabeth married in 1784 the French diplomat François Barbé-Marbois (1745-1837).
