Description
Leonardo da Vinci. Trattato della pittura di Lionardo da Vinci nuovamente dato in luce, colla vita dell' istesso autore, scritta da Rafaelle Du Fresne. Si sono giunti i tre libri della Pittura, ed il trattato della Statua di Leon Battista Alberti, colla Vita del medesimo, E di nuovo ristampato, corretto, ed a maggior perfezione condotto. A reprint of the 1651 Italian Trattato, using the same engravings, though with a few additional engravings by Francesco Sesoni. Ricciardi previously issued this reprint in 1723, but without the additional texts by Alberti. In this copy, the two dedications to Queen Christina of Sweden and Ercole d'Aragona are printed in this order, and the Life of Leonardo appears right at the end of the volume.
Folio (360 x 235 mm), uncut. Roman and italic type, 54 lines plus headline. collation: *2 a2 A-O4 P2 *4 A-F4 G-H2 [*]2: 98 leaves. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Leonardo by Francesco Sesoni, title printed in red and black with engraved armorial of Niccolò Rispolo, engraved initials, head and tailpieces, engraved illustrations, engraved portrait of Alberti, most of these by Sesoni. (Occasional light browning or foxing, a few small marginal tears, small rubbed areas along foredge of title.)
binding: Contemporary vellum-backed patterned paper boards (369 x 253 mm), spine gilt, traces of a pencil drawing on lower pastedown, edges uncut. (Binding somewhat rubbed, tear to spine.)
