Perti, volermi gratiare di prendersi quest’ incomodo consegnarla alla propria Madre a cui nomina là soprascritta…")

Marc'Antonio Ziani was a leading composer of opera in Venice in the late seventeenth century. This letter marks the period of his greatest brilliance before he moved to Vienna. Ziani was evidently close to Perti, and this letter may concern his own family: in another to him in 1703 he expresses despair at losing his wife. Perti was one of the leading composers of church music in Bologna, where he was organist at San Petronio. He was an important teacher, Padre Martini being among his pupils. A copy of this letter is preserved in the Museo internazionale e biblioteca della musica di Bologna, in the hand of Gaetano Gaspari, librarian there from 1855 to 1881.
