“The man who can dominate a London dinner-table can dominate the world,” wrote Oscar Wilde. But aside from witty dinner conversation, the English table has long been renowned for its impressive and expertly crafted silver. A multi-piece setting would perfectly express a host’s timeless sense of taste, and in the case of particularly elaborate displays, one’s noble status. What would you need to recreate a stately spread worthy of an aristocrat? Inspired by our upcoming sale of an important silver collection, as well as our archives, we selected 19 essential and amusing pieces, from teapots to sauce boats, so you can entertain with distinction. LONDON – Arts correspondent for the Guardian Mark Brown talked to Michael Attenborough, ahead of A Life in Art: Lord & Lady Attenborough sale on 22 November. The original interview appeared in the Guardian here.
In his 1998 novel, author William Boyd created a fictional abstract expressionist painter named Nat Tate, and fooled the art world with a little help from his 'Modern Painters' magazine colleague David Bowie. Sotheby’s sale of David Bowie’s art collection, Bowie/Collector, will take place in London on 10–11 November.
The second part of the Bowie/Collector auction reveals the full extent of David Bowie’s eclectic and understated collection. Alongside paintings, drawings and sculpture by 20th-century British artists, there are German Expressionist prints, Picasso ceramics, collections of Contemporary African and Outsider Art, and a Surrealist chess set by Man Ray, all of which provide a unique insight into Bowie’s artistic vision and his passionate collecting journey.
