Why Line & Berry Inlay Embodies Americana Tradition

NEW YORK | 22 JANUARY 2022

Early in 18th Century Pennsylvania, a new revolution of cabinet making began. The technique was called Line & Berry inlay. A process of inscribing a beautiful symphony of curves, circles and dots into the front of many majestic Americana wood cabinets, chests and drawers. These magnificent works are a part of the William du Pont collection, set for auction 22 January 2022. Bill du Pont was a mammoth figure in the Americana furniture movement, taking great pleasure in preserving these pieces, keeping them in rare condition. There will be more Line & Berry furniture offered at Sotheby’s, in this sale, than at any other point in American history.
