Gainsborough, Constable, Turner From Dawn 'Til Dusk

LONDON | JULY 3

Experience a beautiful day in the bucolic English countryside and hear in their own words how three of Britain’s greatest painters felt about the landscapes that inspired them. In this episode of Masterworks, we start at sunrise with Thomas Gainsborough’s ‘Going to Market. Early Morning’. Appearing at auction for only the second time in nearly 250 years, this is unquestionably one of Gainsborough’s finest masterpieces. We move into the afternoon with John Constable’s ‘Study for the White Horse’. This highly important sketch is an early preparatory study for one of the artist’s most celebrated works. We end the day at sunset and J.M.W. Turner’s ‘Landscape With Walton Bridges’. One of around 10 paintings painted in the last 10 years of his life, this is considered one of Turner’s most significant artistic achievements. All three paintings are highlights of our upcoming Old Masters Evening Sale (3 July | London). Click here to watch more Sotheby’s videos.
