Auctions Records, White-Glove Sales, and a Few Surprises in 2018

December 2018

In the past year, Sotheby’s reached a number of milestones and broke a host of auction records, including for any painting sold in Asia, any work by a living female artist and the most valuable car ever sold. Amadeo Modigliani’s masterpiece 'Nu couché' became the most valuable work ever sold at Sotheby’s while a 1945 Romanée Conti became the most expensive bottle of wine ever to be auctioned. Sotheby’s continued to partner with amazing artists, activists, and leaders, such as A$AP Rocky, Ai WeiWei, Victoria Beckham and Bono. The magnificent collections of Barbara and Frank Sinatra, Marsha and Robin Williams, Frank and Lorna Dunphy, as well as Pierre Berge all achieved stunning results. And in what was perhaps the biggest surprise in the art world this year, Sotheby’s marked the first time a piece of live performance art sold at auction with Banksy’s Love is in the Bin.
