S otheby’s is honored to present Design Week in New York on December 7-8, comprising an exciting series of four auctions. Our sale series commences on December 7 with BERTOIA: The Sonambient Barn Collection. This landmark auction event presents a selection of Sonambient sculptures from Bertoia’s own personal collection that represent the most superlative examples from this iconic series -- those which the artist retained for their exceptional tonal and aesthetic qualities. The sale will be followed by PROUVÉ x BASQUIAT: Art and Design from the Collection of Peter M. Brant and Stephanie Seymour, a curated selection of postwar and contemporary art and design that speaks to the exciting intersection of mediums, genres and periods that have inspired the couple in their many decades of collecting. The sale features masterworks by leading European designers including Jean Prouvé, Jean Royère, Charlotte Perriand and Carlo Mollino, together with iconic Contemporary Art by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Richard Prince, Keith Haring, Urs Fischer and more.
Following, we are thrilled to present our annual Important Design and dedicated Tiffany sales. The former is anchored by masterworks of mid-century and postwar design by Claude & François-Xavier Lalanne and Diego Giacometti, led by an important “Hommage à Böcklin” Console. Important pieces of Contemporary Design, American Studio and Arts & Crafts complement a robust European Art Deco chapter which includes masterworks by Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Marcel Coard, Eugène Printz and Jean-Michel Frank. Sotheby’s annual dedicated auction, Dreaming in Glass: Masterworks by Tiffany Studios, features a broad survey of works by the celebrated American firm, including leaded glass lighting, windows, fancy goods, and blown favrile glass. Leading the sale is a selection of naturalistic lamps with outstanding provenance, including an exceptional example of the iconic “Wisteria” lamp from the collection of Philadelphia philanthropists Gabriele and Robert Lee, a “Poppy” floor lamp with original family provenance, and a chapter of artistic favrile glass vases featuring three exceptional “Lava” vases.
