HONG KONG, 13 SEPTEMBER 2021 – This autumn, Sotheby’s and K11 Group will collaborate once again between 18 and 21 September to showcase Sotheby’s Hong Kong 2021 Autumn Auctions Preview at K11 MUSEA, the ‘Silicon Valley of Culture’ in Hong Kong, presenting highlights from Sotheby’s September and October auctions. In line with K11 Group’s mission to promote a diverse variety of art and cultural experiences, K11 MUSEA as it stands atop the site formerly known as New World Centre, has pioneered the development of the Tsim Sha Tsui East Waterfront into a creative hub integrating culture and retail for the community. Today, K11 MUSEA is a world-class cultural-retail destination located in the heart of Victoria Dockside and connected to the Avenue of Stars, a landmark honouring Hong Kong’s vibrant cinematic talents. Championing museum-grade art and culture within its walls, it is, therefore, the most befitting platform to showcase Sotheby’s exceptional auction highlights and the legacy of the Hong Kong film industry.

Wong Kar Wai x Sotheby’s – A Modern Collaboration

A hot topic since its official announcement last week - Wong Kar Wai, one of modern cinema’s most influential film directors, will join the Sotheby's Modern Art Auctions in October, together presenting an unprecedented collection. The K11 MUSEA preview will be the first to publicly showcase the iconic "Heartbreak Tango – Yellow Jacket", which will go under the hammer at Sotheby’s Modern Art Evening Sale on 9 October. The leather jacket was worn by leading actor Leslie Cheung in the film Happy Together (1997), which won Best Director at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, marking the first time a Chinese director had won this award. Depicting the love story of a male couple living in Argentina and starring the legendary Cheung as Ho Po-Wing, the film was groundbreaking at the time. Scenes showing Cheung wearing the leather jacket remain a classic icon for fans, and the jacket, which has been preserved in the Jet Tone Archive since the release of the film 25 years ago, is in excellent condition. In addition, the preview will also showcase "Happy Together | WKW x Jet Tone Films 30th Anniversary", a dedicated sale of collectibles from the Jet Tone Archive. Each item comes with a certificate signed by Wong, encapsulating a symbolic moment in his oeuvre.

A Feast in Art and Creativity

The four-day preview will feature over 40 pieces of modern and contemporary art by Asian and Western masters including Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Lin Fengmian, Zao Wou-Ki, Chu Teh-Chun, Bernard Buffet, Georges Mathieu, Fernando Zobel, Kazuo Shiraga, George Condo and Yoshitomo Nara, while also including an exciting collection of works by market darlings such as Louis Fratino, Joel Mesler and Avery Singer. For modern art, all eyes are on Auguste Rodin's sculpture Napoléon Enveloppé dans Son Réveéves. Created between 1904 and 1909, this marble work is regarded as one of the rarest and most legendary marble sculptures by Rodin to be ever offered at auction. Amongst the highlights for contemporary art is the exuberant masterpiece, Yougen, by Kazuo Shiraga, hailing from the post-Gutai period in 2003. A dynamic example of the artist’s gestural, action-based painting, Yougen is executed in beastly lacerations of red, purple and blue, one of the most charged, exhilarating palettes from the artist’s highly acclaimed foot-painting lexicon.

Zao Wou-Ki, 11.06.93, Oil on canvas, 130 by 97 cm, 1993, Estimate: HK$13,000,000 - 20,000,000 (Modern Art Evening Sale, 9 October)

Fernando Zobel, Lessona, Oil on canvas, 81.5 by 100 cm, 1959, Estimate: HK$2,000,000 – 3,000,000 (Modern Art Evening Sale, 9 October)
