Sotheby’s is delighted to lead this sale with an exceptional parcel of the great 1982 Petrus in a variety of coveted formats,ranging from bottle to imperial. The wines, part of a much larger collection of a longtime friend of Sotheby’s, were recently removed from impeccably maintained, private, purpose-built storage for this sale.
One of the greatest wines produced by the brilliant duo, Christian Moueix and Jean-Claude Berrouet, both of whom preferred elegance to extraction, true masters of balance in a wine. They coaxed freshness from the Merlot in this hot year and delivered a wine that is astonishing in its excitement and complexity. I have found prunes, spices, sweet aniseed and liquorice in the bouquet, a multi-dimensional, exotic meatiness on the palate and mocha intensity on the finish. This is the nec plus ultra of Pomerol’s fabulous plateau, a wine so individual that it imposes itself on the memory with its physical presence.

Now, it is clearly even more remarkable in large format, with each upgrade in size of bottle giving extra youth, vigour and ‘éclat’.

A delightful vintage for hedonists, full of charm, finesse and offering sheer pleasure. Very nice sugar levels ensured drinkability and the balance was always there, together with medium body and poise. Their scent and silkiness are very alluring and the wines should be poured with great confidence at every level – seize the moment and revel in them.
