F ollowing the success of the first edition in Paris, Sotheby's invites art lovers to a new instalment of Mystique de l’Indochine, presenting works from the golden age of modern Vietnamese art. This sale, first presented in Hong Kong in 2020, confirms the international market’s interest in works by modern Vietnamese artists and helped to bring greater recognition to some of the country's greatest painters.
The sale will feature a panorama of Le Pho’s work: an emblematic painting of Notre Dame de Paris from around 1930, a delicate Maternité aux fleurs de pêchers from the 1960s, and the beautiful still life from the 1980s, Les trois vases de roses.
Coinciding with a retrospective of the at the Musée des Ursulines in Macon, in partnership with the Musée Cernuschi (Paris’ Museum for Asian Art), the sale presents three lithographs by Mai Trung Thu, an artist for whom Sotheby's holds the world record. The sale will include a collection of poems by Pham Van Ky illustrated with eight lithographs on silk by the artist.
Lacquer, a material emblematic of Asia and particularly prized by modern Vietnamese artists, adorns several works in the sale, including Paysage du Delta by Tran Dinh Tho.
