Exhibition • 1 July–16 August • New York

O n July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence announced the thirteen colonies' separation from Great Britain and articulated the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As the United States evolved from a fledgling republic into a continental and global power, artists, writers, and makers helped give form to its aspirations, achievements, and contradictions. Drawing inspiration from the nation's vast and varied landscape, diverse people, immigrant communities, industrial growth, and ongoing struggles for citizenship, equality, and civil rights, they created works that reflected lived experience while imagining what America could become. Their creative contributions forged a distinctly American visual and material culture—one shaped not only by innovation and freedom of expression, but also by the diversity of people and perspectives whose voices have continually expanded and redefined the American experience.

Presented on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of American independence, American Views: People & Places brings together art, literature, craft, ephemera, and cultural objects to examine the development and influence of American visual and material culture. Rather than following a strictly chronological history, the exhibition is organized around five thematic chapters that explore the ideas, people, and places that shaped American culture. Making of a Nation examines the people, objects, and imagery that articulated the country’s founding ideals; Dreaming America explores how artists and writers turned to the landscape as a site of meaning and identity; The American West considers the mythology and realities of expansion; American Lives foregrounds the individuals and experiences that shape the nation’s social fabric; and The American Image traces the emergence of a new visual language in the postwar period, particularly through Pop art. By placing works of art in dialogue with literary and material culture, the exhibition reveals the evolution of an American visual vocabulary and underscores the many voices that have continually reimagined the nation’s cultural identity.
