Sotheby’s is the market leader in the field of Orientalist art, an area covering paintings of Turkey, North Africa, the Gulf and the Middle East. While Orientalist art has long been central to the 19th-century European Paintings market, the emergence of new buyers in Turkey, the Middle East, and the Gulf has caused a huge increase in demand. Top quality works by artists, including Jean-Léon Gérôme, Gustav Bauernfeind, Eugène Delacroix, Hermann Corrodi, Ludwig Deutsch and Jacques Majorelle have recently achieved record levels.
Sotheby’s success in this subject is due to our strength as a global team. Our seasoned experts have built this market over several years and have won the trust of buyers and sellers alike. With representatives in Istanbul, Cairo, Doha, and Abu Dhabi, and colleagues devoted to the region in London and New York, we are best positioned to access new buyers.
Since 2010, Sotheby’s has sold £33 million worth of Orientalist art across our three selling locations in London, Paris and New York. Over £20 million of this was achieved in London in our annual Orientalist Sale. Over the past three years, we have established six new artist records at this sale, including those for Ludwig Deutsch, Konstantin Aivazovsky and Hermann Corrodi.
