Lurie had a role in the Basquiat film Downtown 81 and starred in Jim Jarmusch’s pioneering independent films&nbsp;Stranger Than Paradise&nbsp;and&nbsp;Down by Law. His jazz-punk band&nbsp;The Lounge Lizards&nbsp;were at the forefront of the late-1970s New York ‘No-wave’ music scene. At its founding, the band consisted of John Lurie and Evan Lurie, guitarist&nbsp;Arto Lindsay, bassist Steve Piccolo, and percussionist&nbsp;Anton Fier. Though partly inspired by jazz, John Lurie said he used guitarists in the band "to foil the music when it gets too jazzlike.”

Arthur Addison Bright (1861-1906) was a theatrical agent, most famous for his close friendship with J.M.Barrie, but who also acted for a number of successful playwrights including Arthur Conan Doyle, E.W. Hornung and Stephen Phillips. Bright was more than an agent to Barrie; he was a close friend and confidential adviser and played a key role in persuading Barrie to take up play writing. It was Bright who introduced Barrie to the Broadway producer Charles Frohman, who was ultimately responsible for the production of Peter Pan in Britain and America. In 1906 it was discovered that Bright had embezzled royalties from many of his clients, including Barrie and Arthur Conan Doyle. In spite of the financial loss, Barrie staunchly supported his agent. Bright however, found the prospect of legal proceedings too much to bear and on a trip to Lucerne, ostensibly to take the air, he committed suicide. Barrie wrote a short but loving obituary for Bright, which appeared in the Times on Friday, 1st June, 1906, "To the many to whom the keenly intellectual face and noble character of Arthur Addison Bright were incentives to well-doing, it will come as a painful shock that he died suddenly on Tuesday night... Mr Bright had represented a number of authors besides myself in their affairs of the theatre, and it was owing to his encouragement and zealous help more than any other cause that novelists and poets have of late years produced plays. He was a man of a mind the most catholic and cultured, and so beautiful and modest a nature that it may be said of him, he had never time to be much interested in himself, he was so interested in his friends. For many years he had been my most loved friend." The&nbsp;Little&nbsp;White&nbsp;Bird&nbsp;introduces Peter Pan as a magical baby who escapes from being human as an infant, and flies around Kensington Gardens with fairies. This episode, which began as a single chapter, grew into an "elaborate book within a book" as Barrie worked on the novel. Seeing the appeal of the character, Barrie developed Peter Pan into a play first performed in 1904, and following its outstanding success, published a slightly expanded version of the Peter Pan chapters as a single work, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, published in 1906, with illustrations by Arthur Rackham.

Left unfinished due to assorted legal and financial issues until it was fully assembled for release in 2000,&nbsp;Downtown 81&nbsp;follows Basquiat, a naturally compelling screen presence, as he tries to hawk a painting (one of the artist’s own first works) while hustling for a place to sleep. So what was meant to be a document of its time instead became a window into a long-lost world of life on the margins and creative ferment—and it feels especially potent today, when NYC had transformed into an artless ghost town, before escalating racial injustices brought people back to the streets. A limited edition, signed copy of Revolving Doors by Man Ray.&nbsp;<ul><li>Man Ray (American).</li><li>Turin: Luciano Anselmino, 1972.</li><li>Large folio.</li><li>Complete portfolio of 10 pochoir prints.</li><li>Signed and numbered by the artist on the justification.</li><li>Part of an edition of 100 copies on Velin d’Arches paper.</li><li>Prints loose as issued and unbound in plain wrappers, in the original black cloth solander box with "Man Ray" on the spine.</li></ul>&nbsp;Man Ray created a series of collages of geometric shapes titled Revolving Doors between 1916 and 1917. They were included in his third solo show at the Daniel Gallery in New York and were installed on a rotating pole that the viewer could spin, bringing the machine-like anthropomorphic forms to life. The original collages were destroyed, but he later reproduced them in this series of pochoirs, also including the explicative text which originally accompanied each work.

Over 80 volumes from the personal library of author and influential editor Mary Mapes Dodge, with many of the volumes inscribed to Dodge by the authors.<ul><li>Sold as a set of 86 volumes, and 1 autograph letter signed by Dodge.</li><li>Includes 76 first editions, 48 inscribed by the authors to Dodge; 6 inscribed by others to Dodge; 5 signed by author without inscription; 10 volumes with owner markings by Dodge.</li><li>Highlights include many volumes with presentation inscriptions from numerous Dodge contemporaries: Noah Brooks; Alice Cary; Mary Booth ("You have won a signal triumph in making what is confessedly the brightest and best of American juvenile magazines"); Charles Warner Dudley ("your Literature is better than most other people's lives, and your Life is better than most people's Literature"); Lucretia Hale; Laurence Hutton (whose A Boy I Knew was "given to the world by St. Nicholas and Mrs. Dodge"); Robert Johnson Underwood; Carolyn Wells (whose collection of verse was "not so good as [Dodge's] own"); John Greenleaf Whittier; Kate Douglas Wiggins; and Donald Mitchell ("With memories of our pleasant fellowship when I was Captain and she Lieutenant—and with no less pleasant—of the new fellowship (a juster arrangement) when she is Captain and I only Corporal of the guard").</li><li>There are also books gifted to Dodge by friends and family; books Dodge gifted to her son and daughter-in-law; as well as books that Dodge gifted to herself ("Mary Mapes Dodge, With many good wishes, from herself Xmas '90"); and an autograph letter in Dodge's hand that responds to an inquiry regarding her use of pseudonyms.</li><li>Also included is a reading copy of Catharine Morris Wright's Dodge biography Lady of the Silver Skates.</li><li>A full inventory is available upon request.</li></ul> The impressive literary career of Mary Elizabeth Mapes Dodge didn't begin in earnest until after the disappearance and death of her husband in 1858. To support herself and her two young sons, she went to work for her father, the agricultural chemist and inventor James J. Mapes, at his periodicals. Her contributions (published under a variety of pseudonyms) to Working Farmer and United States Journal ranged from poetry, to serials, to advice on the liberation of women, and introduced Dodge to the behind-the-scenes mechanisms of running a magazine. Dodge soon realized that working for her father (who was perpetually broke in spite of his professional successes) would never offer sufficient income, and so she quickly branched out to writing for other magazines and publishers. From warm-hearted juvenilia like The Irvington Stories (her first book) to editorial screeds like "The Shoddy Aristocracy of America" (published in London's Cornhill Magazine), the list of Dodge's publishing credits grew exponentially throughout the 1860s and '70s. Her authorial legacy rests firmly on 1865's Hans Brinker, Or The Silver Skates. So popular was her tale of "child-life in Holland [which she] intended for the young-hearted of all ages" that over 300,000 copies sold in its first year—only Dickens's Our Mutual Friend sold as robustly that year. More than 100 editions in multiple languages were printed in Dodge's lifetime. Her most lasting influence, however, is found in her editorial work. From 1868-1873, she worked as an associate editor for Hearth and Home (briefly "sharing" duties with Harriet Beecher Stowe). As with previous editorships, Dodge's contributions to Hearth and Home were both legion and largely hidden behind pseudonyms. ("Uncle Tim," who produced "puzzles, odd paragraphs, and jolly rhymes" was one of the most popular.) At the end of 1872, Roswell Smith (co-founder of Scribner's Monthly) approached Dodge about creating a children's magazine, and in 1873, St. Nicholas Magazine (so named by Dodge herself) was established. Over the course of the next 30 years, until her death in 1905, Dodge would be a driving force not only at St. Nicholas but in the whole of juvenile publishing. She routinely secured offerings from writers and artists with enormous popular caché: Mark Twain, Louisa May Alcott, George MacDonald, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Joel Chandler Harris, Helen Hunt Jackson, Kate Douglas Wiggin, Thomas Moran, Frederic Remington and more. Indeed, her influence extended well into the next generation. Among the youthful submitters to St. Nicholas League (the magazine's monthly contests department) were future heavyweights Rudyard Kipling, F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, E.B. White, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Bennett Cert (eventual co-founder of Random House). Taken as a whole, this collection offers an intimate window into the private reading life and professional and social circles of one of the most highly regarded editors of the Victorian era, a woman whose exacting vision and editorial acumen helped to shape a full third of the 19th century publishing landscape.

Strong impressions of etchings of grotesque masks after original designs by the Italian artist and engraver Aloisio Giovannoli (1550–1618).<ul><li>Sold as a set of 4.</li><li>Each set with nine plates.</li><li>The publisher claims that the masks were inspired by antiquity, but a more likely source of inspiration is the work of Giulio Romano (Pouncey &amp; Gere, Italian Drawings in the British Museum, Raphael and his circle, London 1962, plates 94, 113) and others, including the French Renaissance artist René Boyvin (ca. 1525–1598).</li><li>Published by Venanzio Monaldini, Rome.</li><li>Published as Serie di Mascheroni Cavati dall'antico che per la prima volta escono in luce intagliati in rame opera utile a professori ed amatori delle belle arti.</li><li>Framed and glazed.</li></ul> Plates are lettered either "Libro P[rimo]" or "Libro S[econdo]" and also numbered, inscribed "C.P." (cum priviligio), some have the artist's name, "Ali Gio." On some plates, this has been partially burnished out. There is no record of any previous issue of the plates, and Monaldini's claim on the title page (not present) that&nbsp;prints here are "per la prima volta escono in luce" makes it probable that these prints are published here for the first time.
