Stanley Seeger was a passionate collector of Picasso in the 1980s, but when he finally managed to acquire a piece from Picasso’s Rose Period he considered himself fulfilled and decided to sell the collection. The auction of 88 works by Picasso in our New York rooms, on 4 November 1993, was a landmark sale and established Seeger as a unique force in the collecting world. The art world took notice of the range, quality, and attention to provenance that distinguished Seeger and Cone’s collecting. The auction was a “white glove” sale raising $32m, despite being held during the art market slump of the early 1990s.
