Ovid's Metamorphoses handsomely bound in a contemporary French binding, including portraits of Plato and Dido. The English Medallion Binder (ca 1550) also used portrait stamps of Plato and Dido (see Nixon, Five Centuries, no.12), plausibly influenced by these.
8vo (160 x 107 mm). Italic type, 29 lines plus headline. collation: a-z8 A-F8: 232 leaves. Title-page and verso of final leaf with woodcut device, woodcut initials, some passages underlined in an early modern hand. (Title-page soiled and frayed at lower margin, marginal dampstaining).
binding: Contemporary French tan calf (167 x 116 mm), border of multiple blind lines and repeated blind rope tool with gilt fleurons at outer corners, in the center of upper cover gilt portrait medallion of Plato surrounded by four gilt eagles, Dido on lower cover, spine with 5 full and 2 half bands, plain edges. (Joints cracked, restored).
