Description

This volume formed part of the Dávila y Toledo library, with its distinctive fore-edge decoration. For more information on this substantial library, see lot 1044 (Budé). Along with lots 1044, 1188 (de Deutz), 1208 (Tacitus), 1229 (Vegetius) and lot 1238 (Villalobos), this volume belonged to Gómez Dávila y Toledo.
8vo (154 x 88 mm). Greek type, 24 lines plus headline. collation: α-γ8 δ4 A-Z8 AA-XX8: 380 leaves. Woodcut initials and headpieces, some annotations and underlining. (First few leaves slightly soiled, other occasional light staining, wormholes in first and last few leaves with some loss of text.)
binding: Contemporary Spanish blind-tooled calf (160 x 106 mm), covers with roll-tooled borders, spine with blind ruling, two pairs of clasps, later sixteenth-century decoration on the fore-edge, title lettered across fore-edge with two armorials, manuscript fragments in binding. (Binding repaired at edges, spine restored, pastedowns lifted to show manuscript fragments, new straps, binding slightly tight.)
