Description
Horae in laudem beatissimae virginis Mariae ad usum Romanum. Accesserunt denuo aliquot suffragia. Lyon: Guillaume Rouillé (Macé Bonhomme), 1550
An attractive interlaced and painted binding, not dissimilar to some made for Thomas Mahieu (see Nixon, Sixteenth-century gold-tooled bookbindings in the Pierpont Morgan Library, no. 21) and Jean Grolier (ibid., no. 25). The woodcuts are attributed to Pierre Eskrich. The final quire contains prayers in French; as the colophon appears on X8, the final quire was perhaps not to be included in all copies. At the time, it was still somewhat problematic to have books of hours in the vernacular, in line with the 1525 Sorbonne prohibition on vernacular bibles.
8vo (190 x 119 mm). Roman type. collation: A-Y8: 176 leaves. Printed in red and black, title within architectural woodcut border, each page with a woodcut architectural or decorative border, woodcut initials and illustrations, ruled in red, four pages of manuscript notes at end with a list of names for the Virgin Mary and a prayer in Latin. (Small hole in title-page, small tear at foot of E5, some light foxing.)
binding: Contemporary French painted interlaced calf gilt (197 x 126 mm), covers with black and green painted interlacing with beige painted scroll ends (perhaps with burgundy paint on lower cover) on a ground of painted dots, small gilt outline fleurons infilled with green, central cartouche painted gold, flat spine with gilt and painted decoration, edges gilt and gauffered to a leafy design, small holes from two pairs of ties or clasps. (Binding slightly rubbed, paint somewhat rubbed and chipped, upper joint cracked.)
