Torah Binder, Italy, 1754


Decorated with a fine chain stitch with a running floral border and inscribed: “The work of my hands, Simhah bat Abraham Motto, 5514 [1754].” A highly similar binder is in the collection of the Jewish Museum, New York (F 2405), and published in The Fabric of Jewish Life (New York: The Jewish Museum, 1977), 48 (no. 21).


Physical Description


Red linen with yellow thread (6 1/2 x 104 in.). Three small holes at the end; some of the stitching of the floral border loose or absent; original linen backing.
