George Marinko was a trailblazing artist whose humble commitment to his craft attracted a dedicated group of followers. Beginning his career with traditional artistic training at the Waterbury Art School and Yale School of Arts, Marinko went on to become a key figure of the Surrealist Movement.

As epitomized by the present work, Marinko combined his technical precision with a personal affinity for Surrealism. His dreamlike originality and virtuosity with color are on display in Still Life, wherein layers of hidden household objects present endless opportunities for discovery and interpretation.

Marinko was included in historic exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the 1939 New York World’s Fair and the Mattatuck Museum in his beloved home state of Connecticut. Though he withdrew to a private life upon his return from service in World War II, Marinko forged an enduring legacy—captured by Still Life’s surprising yet timeless modernism.
