Samurai Sword

signed Graves and dated 54 (lower right)

watercolor and metallic leaf on paper

sheet: 7 ½ by 45 ¼ inches (19 by 115 cm)

framed: 14 ½ by 52 inches (36.8 by 132.1 cm)

The sheet is affixed to its support in three places along the upper reverse edge. The sheet is slightly toned with minor staining along the outer edges. There are artist pinholes and handling creases along the extreme outer edges, including a vertical crease through the right margin where the sheet appears to have been previously folded. The reverse of the sheet appears to have been prepared with a green wash which is visible on the face of the sheet and is consistent with the artist's technique. The metallic leaf on the sword appears to have been selectively applied by the artist and now retains scattered spots of abrasion.
