Description

South German, Swabia, last quarter 15th century

Saint Barbara

parcel-gilt and painted limewood, on a later velvet-covered base

height of figure: 36  3/4 in.; 93.5 cm.

height of base: 2  3/8 in.; 6.1 cm.

The style of this figure, with its sweeping folds and distinct diagonal lines of drapery, recalls those of the female saints carved in Swabia during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The saint's plaited hairstyle and crown also reveal connections to carvings produced by artists in the circle of Niclaus Gerhaert (c. 1420-1473) who worked in the Upper Rhine. There were prolific schools of skilled painters and sculptors centered in the Upper Rhine region and in Swabia, though the identities of the majority of these artists have since been lost.
