Sotheby’s is extremely pleased to announce the sale of a selection of historical pieces from the Collection Ribes. These fabulous works will be on sale at Sotheby’s Paris on 11 and 12 December, and will present one of the most fascinating ensembles of paintings, French decorative arts and exceptional books to appear on the market in recent years.
The prestigious library of the comte de Ribes, comprising the most valuable French books from the 16th to the 21st centuries, was amassed by two generations of eminent bibliophiles. It includes rare original editions by Montaigne, Ronsard and Du Bellay in their contemporary bindings, as well as choice copies of remarkable illustrated 18th century volumes.
The greatest 19th century authors are represented by editions in fine paper, some inscribed. Exceptional bindings, from Paul Bonet, Monique Mathieu and Frère Claes cover original editions, from Apollinaire to Proust, as well as illustrated books by artists from Pablo Picasso to Louise Bourgeois.
