AOL Co-Founder’s $62.9 Million Estate is the Most Expensive Listing to Hit the Washington, D.C. Market

For Sale: A fully restored Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home located on a secluded site overlooking the Potomac in McLean, Virginia. One of a handful of residences in the suburban Washington, DC, area with the imprimatur of the famous 20th-century architect, the 1959 Marden House is priceless. But it’s also just one amenity at The Falls, a 3.2-acre estate formerly owned by America Online co-founder James V Kimsey and recently listed by TTR Sotheby’s International Realty for nearly $63 million.

Kimsey, the late philanthropist and entrepreneur who made “You’ve got mail” a defining cultural phrase of the 1990s, acquired the Wright house a few years after he bought a nearby site and built a new nine-bedroom, thirteen-bath home reached by a private drive and featuring a wine cellar, infinity pool, mahogany-paneled library, media room and an underground parking garage that accommodates 30 cars. This is a home for those who like to entertain.

The listing is the highest ever for the area, a spot held until 24 May by Merrywood, the $49.5 million estate sold by Steve Case, who was Kimsey’s hand-picked successor at AOL. In further coincidence, TTR Sotheby’s International Realty closed the deal on the historic Merrywood, a childhood home of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, the same day The Falls hit the market.
