Recorded live in Napa Valley at the Kramlich Residence—which was built by architects Herzog & De Meuron—this wide ranging discussion about collecting and supporting art is with guests Pamela and Dick Kramlich, two of the world’s foremost patrons of video, new media and time-based art; Stuart Comer, chief curator of media and performance at the Museum of Modern Art in New York; and artist Richard Mosse, together with host Charlotte Burns.

Pamela Kramlich

Co-founder of the Kramlich Collection and the New Art Trust
Pamela Kramlich graduated in Art History from the University of California at Berkeley. She is Chairman of the New Art Trust, San Francisco; Member of the the Media and Performance Committee at MoMA, New York; on the Board of Trustees and Member of both the Committee for Media Art and the International Accessions Committee at SFMOMA, San Francisco; Member of the Advisory Committee at Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at UC Davis; and Member of the Tate International Council, London.

Richard Kramlich

Co-founder of the Kramlich Collection and the New Art Trust
Richard Kramlich graduated from Northwestern University and Harvard Business School. He is the Chairman and Co-Founder of New Enterprise Associates Management Company, an international venture capital firm; Chairman and CEO of Kramlich Investment Company Co-Invest; Director Emeritus of the Exploratorium; a Member of the Board of the Asia Society; and Treasurer of New Art Trust.

Stuart Comer

Chief curator of the department of media and performance at The Museum of Modern Art
Stuart Comer was appointed Chief Curator of the Department of Media and Performance at The Museum of Modern Art in 2013. He oversees the department’s program of exhibitions, events, acquisitions, and collections, and The Marie-Josée and Henry Kravis Studio. Since his appointment, Mr. Comer’s projects at MoMA have included member: Pope.L, 1978-2001 (2019), Haegue Yang: Handles (2019), Tania Bruguera: Untitled (Havana, 2000) (2018), Inbox: Steve McQueen (2017), Inbox: Charles Atlas (2017), Alexandra Bachzetsis’s Massacre: Variations on a Theme (2017), Mark Leckey: Containers and Their Drivers (at MoMA PS1, 2016), BRUCE CONNER: IT’S ALL TRUE (2016), Tony Oursler: Imponderable (2016), Bouchra Khalili: The Mapping Journey Project (2016), Transmissions: Art in Eastern Europe and Latin America, 1960–1980 (2015), Juliana Huxtable: There Are Certain Facts that Cannot Be Disputed (2015), Cut to Swipe (2014), and Simone Forti and Charlemagne Palestine: illlummminnnatttionnnsssss!!!!!!! (2014).

Mr. Comer was co-curator of the Whitney Museum of American Art’s 2014 Biennial, and previously served as the first Curator of Film at Tate Modern, London, where he oversaw film and video work for the Tate Collection and Displays and was co-curator for the opening program of the Tanks at Tate Modern.

Mr. Comer has recently hosted talks at The Museum of Modern Art with artists including Dara Birnbaum, Ian Cheng, Luke Fowler, Isaac Julien, Naeem Mohaiemen, Hito Steyerl, and Christopher Williams, and he recently lectured on Pope.L at MOCA, Los Angeles. He has contributed to numerous periodicals, including Artforum, Frieze, Afterall, Mousse, Parkett, and Art Review. He is editor of Film and Video Art (Tate Publishing, 2009) and has contributed essays to publications on such artists as Tom Burr, Andrea Fraser, David Lamelas, Sharon Lockhart, Mark Morrisroe, Bik Van Der Pol, and Gillian Wearing.

Richard Mosse

Mosse was born in 1980 in Ireland and is based in New York. He earned an MFA in Photography from Yale School of Art in 2008 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art from Goldsmiths, London in 2005. Mosse has exhibited work at the Palazzo Strozzi, Florence; the Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro; the Bass Museum of Art, Miami; the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin; the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris; the Dublin Contemporary Biennial; FotoMuseum Antwerp (FoMu); FOAM, Amsterdam; and the Tate Modern, London.

Charlotte Burns

Executive editor of In Other Words
Charlotte Burns is the editor of In Other Words, our weekly newsletters and podcasts. She was previously the US news and market editor for The Art Newspaper, as well as a regular correspondent for publications such as the Guardian and Monocle. Previously, she worked with the London dealer Anthony d’Offay on special projects. For several years, she was a consultant at the cultural communications agency, Bolton & Quinn. She also worked at Hauser & Wirth in London.

Burns received a Masters degree (with Merit) from the Courtauld Institute in Art and Cultural Politics in Germany, 1890-1945, as well as a first-class B.A. honors degree in English and History of Art from Birmingham University. She moved to New York in 2010.
