S otheby’s is pleased to present New York’s December sale, “Fine Books and Manuscripts,” open for bidding the 29th of November through the 16th of December. The auction will bring together a rich array of material, from Galileo to Ginsberg.

Auction Highlights
The Carnegie Museum of Natural History: Lots 61-70

Sotheby’s is proud to offer lots 61-70, a fine selection of works from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The mission of the Museum, founded in 1895, is “to deepen wonder and advance understanding of our natural world—past and present—in order to embrace responsibility for our collective future.” One of the Museum’s institutional commitments is:

Cherished Collection: Stewarding and studying the millions of specimens and objects in our care, which together provide the evidence of life and change on Earth over time.

Funds derived from the sale of these magnificent lots will support the direct care, conservation, and preservation of the museum’s 22 million specimens and objects.

Auction Overview

In addition to the aforementioned landmarks of colorplate and natural history with exceptional provenance, we are delighted to offer a variety of literary works including John Donne’s Poems (1633), a charming presentation copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (1998), and many other classics spanning the centuries. On the centenary of the publication of James Joyce’s Ulysses—arguably the most important novel of the 20th century—we are thrilled to bring to auction a fantastic association copy of the scarce first edition of this masterpiece: the novelist, poet, editor, and partner to H.D., Annie Winifred Ellerman’s (better known as Bryher) copy of Ulysses, number 41 of only 100 copies printed on Dutch handmade paper signed by the author. Alongside this, we will also feature a selection of additional Joyce titles, as well as other Modernist high spots, such as F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby (1925) in the scarce dust jacket.
