Original watercolour illustration produced for the 1938 series of American Weekly covers 'Fighting Women', published 19th June 1938. Thomysis, Queen of the Massagae, is depicted here stood triumphantly over the head of Cyrus the Persian whose invading army she had defeated. The other fighting women included in the series were: Penethesilea, Hyppolyte, Zenobia, Mu-Lan, Joan of Arc, and Molly Pitcher (see lot 279).
