Cecil Rhodes
Autograph letter signed ("C.J. Rhodes"), to Lady Violet Cecil
written during his final progress through Rhodesia, opining on the Boer War ("...I suppose the war must be looked on as a great boon for letting us find out our deficiencies and I am sure the old grit has not gone out of the nation...") and grumbling about the generous treatment of the Boers, 8 pages, 8vo, headed stationery of Groote Schuur, Rondesbosch, Cape Town, autograph addressed envelope, undated but postmarked 10 May 1901 (with a postscript explaining that the letter "has ben lying unposted for two months")

In 1901 Rhodes was in declining health. He died in March 1902.
