Robert Bordo has long been known for his paintings, which lie at the intersection of modernist formal concerns and postmodern approaches to images, subject matter, and the use of metaphor. His work often addresses recurring and related conceptual elements, including memory and the experience of the passage of time; landscapes, nature, and weather phenomena; cartography, geography, and mapping; systems of communication; and mark-making as an indicator or residue of thought. While seldom explicitly abstract or figurative, Bordo’s paintings often communicate through the use of universal signs and systems.
Bordo's work has been included in exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, among others.
