In 1615 the English composer and organist Peter Philips (c.1561-1628) was invited to contribute to Les rossignols spirituels, a collection of adaptations of popular tunes (to which Philips added simple bass parts) set to verses in French for the education of children. The collection is notable for containing three four-part Latin pieces, one being an otherwise unknown Hodie Maria virgo caelos ascendos for three sopranos and tenor by Palestrina. It is speculated that Philips may have obtained the piece personally from Palestrina during his time in Rome (1582-1585). There were four editions of Les rossignols spirituels, those of 1616, 1621, 1631 and 1647.
