Francis Bacon’s "Two Studies for a Self-Portrait" from 1970 reveals the artist in a rare optimistic moment. Painted just before his triumphant retrospective at the Grand Palais in 1971, this work has only been exhibited twice before: first at the Grand Palais in 1971 and then again at Marlborough Fine Art in 1993. "Two Studies for a Self-Portrait" leads Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Auction on 11 May 2016.
