How Joan Mitchell Turned Grief Into Colour

Hong Kong | 29 March 2026

Sunlight, laughter, endless flower fields — Joan Mitchell’s Lagoon Valley series captures the impossible desire to return to childhood memories. Created in the 1980s amid grief and loss, these canvases collide golds, oranges, and lavenders with deep blues and greens, evoking places we almost remember but can’t quite reach. This is Mitchell at her fiercest and most tender: turning memory into movement, grief into colour, and painting into a doorway to the past.

The work is on offer in the Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction taking place at Sotheby’s Hong Kong on 29 March.
