Sotheby’s inaugural Art of Travel and Exploration sale this December showcases work by western artists who went beyond the familiar sites of Europe and the Mediterranean to destinations further afield. From China to South America, and from the Poles to Africa, these artist-travellers recorded their experiences in evocative scenes of daily life, topographical views, and exotic images of flora and fauna.
Highlights include a group of fresh-to-market paintings by Isaac Israels from his journey to Indonesia and the German artist Ferdinand Bellerman’s view of a Venezuelan sugar plantation, while François Musin’s masterpiece depicts the search for ill-fated polar explorer Sir John Franklin, lost in the search for the North-west passage. An exceptional and rare panorama vividly brings to life a journey from London to Hong Kong circa 1860.
The sale will take place during 19th Century Week at Sotheby’s, alongside our sales of 19th Century European Paintings, Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite & British Impressionist Art, and 19th Century Sculpture.
